There have been talks and arguments on whether Nigerian rappers are lyrically capable to stand against rappers from other countries (South Africa, Kenya, UK, USA). Hip-hop in Nigeria has yet to experience the kind of love and support other countries are showing to their rappers and the rap culture.
Although there are many people who have compelled themselves to believe that Hip-hop in Nigeria is dead, we cannot deny that some rappers have remained true to their craft and have consistently churned out quality rap songs.
With a more proper structure and more acceptance of Hip-hop in Nigeria, there are rappers who we can confidently appoint to represent the country on an international level. These are rappers who have been able to prove their lyrical dexterity, immaculate flows, and untouchable rhyme schemes.
Some of these rappers are;
Modenine
Mode 9 is one of the greatest lyrical geniuses we have in Nigerian Hip-hop. Modenine is a seven-time winner of The Headies for Lyricist on the Roll.
Born in London, Modenine has been one of the most influential rappers in Nigeria. So far, he has released seven studio albums and five mixtapes. He has been hailed as the most talented lyricist in Nigeria.
Modenine has definitely proven himself capable of being on par with rappers from other countries. His discography can speak for him.
M.I
M.I Abaga as he is usually called is one of the most successful Nigerian rappers. He is the Ceo of Chocolate City and he has played a vital role in keeping Hip-Hop in Nigeria alive.
M.I has released critically-acclaimed albums and mixtapes, all of which have enjoyed great commercial success. He is known as one of the greats in Nigerian Hip-hop.
There is not a shade of doubt that M.I can match the abilities of many rappers from various countries. He would certainly make a good representative for Nigeria in the international scene.
Vector
Vector Tha Viper is a beast on the mic and on the instrumental. His flows are pure and smooth, his lyrics are rich. His wordplay is phenomenal.
He has released three studio albums and two mixtapes so far. He has massacred so many cyphers and has finished fellow rappers in rap battles and diss tracks.
Vector has what it takes to represent Nigeria in an international rap battle or competition. The Lafiaji rapper is a lyrical machine.
Ladipoe
Ladipoe is a wordsmith who performs magic with words on instrumentals. He is usually commended for his philosophical musings and intellectual discussions on his tracks.
He released his debut album Talk About Poe last year and it was widely received with massive acclaim. His unique style of rap has set him apart in the world of Hip-Hop in Nigeria.
Ladipoe is talented enough to face rappers from other countries squarely without being pushed to the side.
Reminisce
Quite a number of people underrate this man’s lyrical genius because of his style of rap. Reminisce is one of the most gifted Nigerian rappers in the Hip-hop scene.
Mostly referred to as Alaga Ibile, the rapper (who states that he is not an indigenous rapper) has released four studio albums. He has also dropped a number of hit singles that have established him as both a good rapper and a skilled songwriter.
Without the sliver of a doubt, Reminisce is a suitable candidate to par with rappers outside Nigeria.
SDC
Rap duo SDC (Show Dem Camp) which consists of Ghost and Tec are outstanding. They have released some of the best Hip-hop projects the country has ever seen.
Pushing the Alternative sound in Nigeria to remarkable heights, SDC is lyrically affluent. They have been touted as some of the most blessed rap voices in the Nigerian music industry.
One can be well assured that SDC will flourish if pitted against foreign rappers.
Boogey
Boogey is an exceptional rapper whose music usually represents his current state of mind or the regular happenings in our society. His music is conscious and his knack for poetry makes itself evident on his tracks.
Boogey has pushed hard as an independent artist and has successfully released mixtapes which many critics have deemed to be of standard quality.
If Nigeria were to participate in an international rap competition, Boogey would make a smart choice as a representative of the country.
Some notable mentions who can also give it a shot are Blaqbonez, Terry Tha Rapman, Jesse Jagz, and others.
