Keeping It #KALM & Sexy with David Adonis

I’ve been blogging on music for close to a decade but like you I still love the feeling of discovering new music.

I’m one of those people who has been wondering where all the R&B has gone, like i was raised on Jodeci “Feeeenin”, Keith Sweat “Twisted”*insert puffy adlib”take that”*

…so im definitely here for any brothers (or sisters) that want to sing songs to inspire me to cry and call my ex at 2am(see tracks 9 -11).

 

Even before Burnaboy showed us how he likes to party, there has been a trend of Nigerian musicians in the disapora jumping in the already vibrant pool of Naija music and creating new waves – Sauce kid, Davido, Iceberg, Nonso Amadi, Odunsi, Wavy and a lot more

 

…add David Adonis to that list.

The first time we saw him was in the Knighthouse, working with the Gomez and the crew where he dropped “Sweat” featuring Teeto Cemos. Through this period he also worked with other acts like Slim T, Wizkid, Exo, Beazy and Hakym the Dream.

The former bouncer and cage fighter put the music aside to travel to the UK for his studies. Now nearly a decade later, older and wiser but still a problem for the ladies – Adonis returns with the #KALM mixtape.

The mixtape #KALM features 22 tracks and one interlude, i have listened to all 23 (not at the same time, chill, thats a round trip from Lagos to Badagry) and overall? I like it.

There are no flame beats in here that will have you convulsing with the holyghost or make you want to bite the head off a dove

(except maybe “Getting to the bag” which is a bonus track)

BUT there is a lot of kalm melodic and incredibly infectious hooks that will either make you want to go out and party or more likely stay home and make strong love to somebody.

I like that the mixtape is easy listening, the smooth melodic vibes literally caress your eardrums, but there is enough variety in the tracks to keep you there for all 23 – for those of you like me who get bored easily.

Secondly i  like the creativity in the songwriting

coupled with the fact that the track is also 4:20 in length i think this is brilliant

(i’m easily pleased).

” I know theres a better man for you, but hes got to get through me”

If that is not a line to type over some of your best snapshots and snapchat to your crush at quarter past 5 in the morning i dont know what is.

The single “Pepper Dem” a fun and incredibly infectious mid tempo club banger has already been featured on GRM Daily one of the most visited urban music websites in the UK. Other standouts for me include “Liz Benson” and “Slowly” which for me – sounds like a bottle of Baileys had a baby with a weekend adlib.

I will also be adding are “Bam Bam”, “Blase”, “Into You”, “420”, “Vibrations” and “Some Kinna Way” to my “driving at nighttime/getting ready to go out” playlist

..oh and I love the message in “Your Body”.

Honestly, there is a consistent calm vibe throughout, if i would describe his music in one word it would be “Smooth”. We will wait to find out if he is the typical R&B Mr Lover Lover or if there is more to him than meets the eye.

In summary, i think this is perfect for the omo-boys ladies men who are always looking for new tracks to add to their triple x rated playlist, its also perfect for the single moms and young ladies because….well look at him.
